A black shadow seems to grimace against a slightly receding sidewalk. The shadow is not attached to its human figure. I first felt subtle waves of contractions as I lay in the sand at Ocean Beach in San Francisco. We walked from Ocean Beach to my acupuncturist on 29th Street and San Jose Ave and I watched my shadow quiver with the warm, steady excitment of every contraction.
